De Royan Newsletter Summer 2011  Afrikaans

   Dear wine friends & family

They say that you only get two kinds of people: people that like to go to a party or people that would like to leave a party.  And they are usually married to each other!

And it seems that we are in the season of parties: farewell parties, end of year functions, birthdays, weddings, party planning parties...it just does not seem to stop at this time of the year.

Thank you!

Amidst all the parties and the end of year rush, we would like to look back at 2010 and thank you, our faithful De Royan reader and our Bosman Family Wine Club Members, for your valued support & constructive feedback during the year.  It remains a small miracle in the massive world of wine, where the options are endless, that people decide to buy your bottle of wine that you have made.  We truly appreciate it!

We hope that our wines and what it stands for, will always be inspirational to you and that the vintages ahead will continue to be nothing less than thrilling.

   Vintage Report
  Viticulturist: Heinie Nel

So what does the next vintage look like at Bosman Family Vineyards? I had a word with our Viticultarist, Heinie Nel and here are his thoughts on the 2011 vintage that is currently developing in the vineyards:

"Talking about a harvest before the grapes are harvested is a little bit like looking at a sonar scan of you unborn child. As long as everything is there and the baby looks healthy and normal, you are just deeply grateful! In a sense, that is as much as I would dare to say at this point in time about the 2011 harvest. The vineyards all look healthy and the crop looks like it could yield normal harvest levels, which will be better than 2010 when we had losses as a result of wind damage.

Currently we are managing the vineyards systematically to ensure that we can guide them in the direction where they can yield the best quality fruit.

In short, I am not concerned about anything in the vineyards and I think we can look forward to a good growing and ripening season - as long as the weather collaborates with us..."

  19 - 21 March: Harvest Festival 2011
Heinie might be hesitant to make any predictions about next years harvest, but our 2011 Harvest Festival will DEFINITELY take place from 19-21 March 2011. Get your calendars out and mark 19-21 March 2011 as your weekend away in Wellington.  It is a great opportunity to taste the wines of our region and get to know the people of our wonderful little town.

At our Bosman Family Vineyards Long Lunch (19 & 20 March 2011), we will make sure that there will be plenty of good food, good quality entertainment and of course, inspirational wines to keep you, your friends and children entertained beneath our old oak trees.

Easy Summer Recipe: Twinkle's Salad and Rosé
Since it is summer and it is bound to be hot, we have thought of a cool solution for a light lunch with our 30 varietal Rosé this summer:

GRAPEFRUIT & DATE SALAD WITH ROSEWATER 4 large juicy grapefruit - chilled
8 Dates, stoned & roughly chopped
Fresh, clean, crisp salad leaves
Few mint or basil leaves
2-3 tablespoons rosewater
Icing sugar for dusting (optional)
1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon (optional)

METHOD
1) With a sharp knife, cut the rind of each grapefruit, leaving no bitter pith.
2) Slicing each grapefruit into rounds discard any seeds and arrange on salad leaves.
3) Scatter dates over grapefruit rings and sprinkle rose water on top.
4) Scatter with mint leaves then dust with icing sugar & cinnamon.

   Epilogue
You do not need much of a reminder that Christmas is around the corner: the shops are decorated with red, silver and gold decorations and even on television and radio commercials the sounds and sights of Christmas are quite evident.

We believe Christmas marks a great event in the history of the world, symbolising the birth of Christ.  There is something that defines us as human beings: LOVE.

It is as if love is the fruit that grows from humans.  Some people have the ability to express love in such a manner that you experience their love as tangible and ripe.  Other people less so.

May you be filled with love this summer and share love with the ones you love and even with the ones you don't.

And may you know that you are loved!

  Best wishes,
