As you may know, Bosman Family Vineyards are restoring the old family cellar for their return to the world of wine-making. Through De Royan we will keep our esteemed customers and other friends informed of our progress on a four monthly basis.
Big news is our first Bosman Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. We are delighted with its quality and regard the wine as a powerful indicator of our wine-making potential.
Over the last five decades we have focused our energy on our vine nursery business Lelienfontein Vinegrowers and developed it into the largest enterprise of its kind on the African continent. With over 7 million plants cultivated each year, we can select high-quality vines for our vineyards and then again select the finest grapes from premium blocks.
We feel it makes sense to concentrate on Cabernet Sauvignon, which performs exceptionally well in our micro-climate with its warm days and cool nights, and soils that ensure naturally balanced wines.
Previously, Bosman’s high-quality grapes were used under other labels, notably Wamakersvallei’s La Cave Cabernet Sauvignon 2001, which won the prestigious Warren Winiarski Trophy for the world’s best Cabernet at the International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2003.
Extensive renovations to our old wine cellar will enable us to make our own wine ‘from vine to wine’ and our Bosman Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 is a trail blazer for what we are trying to achieve.
As our winemaker Petrus Bosman puts it: “The wine signifies a proud return to our wine-making heritage. It’s faithful to tradition, yet embraces progress – also the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the family.”
The Cabernet was made from three blocks with diverse original origin: one from Germany, namely the Schleipp (prominent grass and berry); the second from the popular Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Bordeaux (tropical fruit) and one developed from successful South African Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards, now also an award-winning vineyard (lending a nut and herb profile).
The grapes were hand-harvested and hand-sorted and vinified as gently as possible. Maturation in small barrels of fine French oak created a rich, balanced red of generous character – both elegant and complex.
Fresh blackberry, maraschino cherry and vanilla flavours can be detected on the nose and the palate is lively with ripe fruit flavours. Firm wood tannins ensure benefit from a further five to six years in the bottle, but it can also be enjoyed on release. We recommend that you decant the young wine for maximum pleasure.
